Sony has introduced the FX2, a compact full-frame camera designed to extend its Cinema Line in a way that addresses both filmmaking demands and hybrid shooting needs. The FX2 isn’t just about capturing footage—it aims to bring cinematic depth and usability enhancements to creators who often work solo or with minimal support. Building on feedback from existing users, Sony’s latest camera takes several cues from its FX3 and FX30 siblings while introducing new elements that reflect the changing landscape of production work.
A Familiar Form, With New Focus on Usability
The FX2 maintains a similar body design to the FX3—compact, flat-top, and rig-friendly with built-in 1/4-20” mounting points. However, it’s now equipped with a new articulating electronic viewfinder (3.68 million dots) featuring a deep eyepiece meant for immersive monitoring, especially for video production. Also onboard is a 3.0-inch vari-angle touchscreen, which adds flexibility when framing from unconventional angles.
Sony has introduced a new “BIG6” home screen that provides one-tap access to essential shooting parameters like FPS, ISO, shutter angle, and ND filters. For those creating vertical content, such as for social platforms, the FX2 even supports a vertical shooting menu interface.
Hybrid Capabilities with an Emphasis on Video
The FX2 features a 33.0MP back-illuminated Exmor R sensor, making it capable of both high-res stills and video. With support for up to 15+ stops of dynamic range through S-Log3 and dual base ISO (800 and 4000), it offers solid low-light performance. Frame rate options include 4K at up to 60p and Full HD at up to 120p, providing opportunities for cinematic slow motion without an external recorder.
Continuous 4K 60p recording for up to 13 hours is possible thanks to an internal cooling system—a useful feature for documentary or event shooting where downtime isn’t an option. The camera also supports formats like XAVC S-I (10-bit 4:2:2), and Log workflows including Cine EI, Cine EI Quick, and Flexible ISO.
Focus Tools and Framing Enhancements
Autofocus on the FX2 benefits from Sony’s Real-time Recognition AF system, which detects humans, animals, birds, vehicles, and insects with improved accuracy. New features like AF Assist and breathing compensation give users more granular control over focus transitions, especially during handheld or gimbal work.
For fixed tripod setups, Auto Framing digitally tracks and crops the frame to keep subjects centered, while the new Framing Stabilizer keeps a consistent subject position during movement—a useful addition for vloggers or solo interviewers.
Connectivity and Audio Options for a Modern Workflow
The FX2 offers professional-level connectivity options, including HDMI Type-A output (up to 4K 60p 10-bit 4:2:2 and 16-bit RAW), USB-C 10Gbps transfer, and wired LAN via adapter. Dual-band Wi-Fi is built-in, and the camera supports direct live streaming without needing additional gear.
Audio is also well-supported with 4-channel, 24-bit digital capture through optional XLR/TRS inputs on the handle unit and a standard 3.5mm mic jack. The camera supports USB power delivery, helping reduce downtime during longer shoots.
In line with Sony’s environmental goals, the FX2 is built in facilities powered by renewable energy and includes accessibility features like screen readers and display magnification.
The FX2 will be available starting August 2025. The body-only version is priced at $2,699.99 USD, while the model bundled with an XLR handle goes for $3,099.99 USD.
